Applicants submit (using the Special Chefs Contest Application) an original recipe according to the specific contest guidelines noted above. An original recipe is either created by the chef or is developed by taking an existing recipe and adding or deleting three or more ingredients, or by altering the cooking methods.

From all the submissions, a specified number of finalists is chosen to travel to the contest destination for the exciting last phase of competition-the Cook-off. Each finalist must have a guardian or care giver along as a traveling companion. All expenses are paid by Special Chefs as designated in Contest Rules. Special Chefs provides all ingredients and equipment for the finalists at the Cook-off.

The Cook-off features each of the finalists preparing their recipe with the assistance (if they desire) of a traveling companion. The entries will be judged by an impartial panel of food experts who are appreciative of the unique talents of the entrants. Recipes will be evaluated according to creativity, ease-of-preparation, completeness, and taste.
