A bountiful table is the essence of community and at the core of many defining moments with friends, neighbors, and family. There is no question that inspired cooking encourages meaningful socialization that everyone deserves to be a part of. This page will be updated regularly with insights about how to use food as a vehicle for integrating into the community and as a catalyst for warm memories and happy times.
Organize potlucks. There is no better time than fall and winter to come together as the days grow shorter and the cooler temperatures keep us indoors a bit more. Including food in these gatherings will add to the enjoyment for everyone. A potluck is a meal that everyone prepares by bringing a dish for all to share.
You might want to choose a theme (although this isn’t necessary), such as Oktoberfest, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, New Year’s, Mardi Gras or Valentine’s Day—or all of these! You can become the social center for your friends and family!
Then ask for help in preparing the food. People will have favorites they like to bring for a crowd. Others will want to trial new recipes. There isn’t a right or a wrong way to do a potluck, it’s just a matter of sharing and enjoying one another.
It is important, however, to make sure that you have covered some important bases when planning a potluck. For example, who will be responsible for beverages, plates, napkins and silverware? Also, if you are having a dessert potluck, it’s a good idea to make sure that everyone doesn’t make chocolate chip cookies, as an example. Variety is always nice. If you are having a lunch or dinner potluck, are you sure you have the right kinds of foods? For instance, do you have salads, entrees, and dessert covered?
You might also have to set some guidelines about cold foods and heated foods. Oven and stove top space may be limited, so that too many dishes that need to be kept warm might not work out logistically.
You can tell that a potluck takes a little bit of planning. With a little bit of effort, you’ll end up with a smorgasbord of delectable food, conversation, and stories to last a lifetime.
